Wie ist das Monument Valley entstanden?
Vor mehreren Millionen Jahren entstand das Monument Valley aus einem Tieflandbecken. Durch Druck von unterhalb der Erdoberfläche wurde das einstige Tieflandbecken zu einem 2100 m hohen Felsplateau. Durch Erosion und Abtragungen kam es dazu, dass diese, für uns heute sehr ortstypischen Tafelberge entstanden.
Ist das Monument Valley eine Wüste?
Das Monument Valley ist kein ‚Tal‘ im eigentlichen Sinn, sondern eher eine weite, wüstenhafte Landfläche, die von hoch aufragenden, riesigen Steinen, die hunderte von Metern in die Höhe ragen unterbrochen wird. Es sind Überbleibsel jener Sandsteinschichten, die einst die ganze Region bedeckten.
Wie sah der Monument Valley früher aus?
Die markanten Tafelberg-Strukturen bestehen aus etwa 275 Millionen Jahre altem De Chelly Sandstein aus dem frühen Perm. Im Rahmen der Laramischen Gebirgsbildung vor etwa 70 Millionen Jahren wurde die Oberfläche durch stetigen Druck von unten angehoben. Das einstige Becken wurde zu einem 2100 m hohen Felsplateau.
Wie lange braucht man im Monument Valley?
Plant auf jeden Fall mindestens drei Stunden für die Fahrt ein, dann sollte auch ausreichend Zeit für einige Zwischenstopps sein. Für mich war der „17 mile loop drive“ definitiv DAS Erlebnis schlechthin im Monument Valley.
